Actually he represents the Italian Democratic Party and is a member of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) parliamentary group from 2010. On September 1, 1997 he was appointed Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP),〔(Pino Arlacchi, United Nations Under-Secretary-General ), United Nations Department of Public Information, March 2000〕 with the rank of Under-Secretary-General. Currently, he is a full professor of sociology at the University of Sassari. == Biography == He was born in Gioia Tauro, Calabria (Italy). In the early 1990s he was involved in the foundation of the Direzione Investigativa Antimafia (DIA), a law-enforcement agency specially entrusted with fighting organized crime.〔 Later on he became president of IASOC (International Organization of studies on organized crime).
